When we set off on our morning walk the next day, an enchanted winter wonderland awaited us. The rain must have turned to snowfall at some point during the last few hours of the night, and the whole landscape was now a sparkling white in the light of the morning sun.
Pearl immediately turned off into the undergrowth and ran to the clearing where we had first met Moonshadow.
"Don't stay too long," Victoria called after us. Fortunately, she always gave us plenty of space to roam on our walks, but it was really bitterly cold that morning so her patience would certainly be limited.
Pearl didn't complain once about the freezing temperatures, but sniffed around on the ground, stared into the copse and finally called Moonshadow's name.
The lynx, however, did not show up.
"Where might he be, Athos?" she meowed in worry.
I couldn't sniff out any trace of the big cat either, but that didn't surprise me. We knew by now that he could only be found if he wanted to be.
"Maybe he's sleeping," I suggested. "Lynxes are mainly nocturnal, I think. And his territory must be huge. Why would he hang out near the hotel?"
For my sake, I heard Pearl thinking. Or was I just imagining it?
I wanted to say more to reassure her, but suddenly the smell of a human caught my nose. I turned my head and walked a few steps in the direction it had come from.
Yes, definitely a human. And it had to be someone I'd met before, because the smell seemed somehow familiar.
Pearl now also pressed her nose to the earth. However, just like me, she had difficulties in assigning the smell to the right person.
We followed the trail. It led deeper into the forest.
